Areti-Maria Sougari is a Professor of Applied Linguistics in the Department of Theoretical and Applied Linguistics, School of English, Aristotle University of Thessaloniki. She holds a B.A. in English Language and Literature from Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, an M.A. in Linguistics and English Language Teaching from the University of Leeds, UK, and a Ph.D. in Applied Linguistics from the University of Essex, UK. Upon completion of her studies, she was appointed as an assistant professor at American College of Thessaloniki (ACT) and then she taught ESP in the Department of Physics and the Department of Computer Science, Aristotle University of Thessaloniki. She has participated in a number of teacher training courses organised in the private and the state sector. She has coordinated a regional in-service teacher training course (‘Teaching English in the Primary Classroom: New Challenges - New Approaches’). As part of her teaching duties at the School of English, she has taught a number of courses both theoretical and practical in nature. Practical courses touch upon the issues of teaching practice in primary schools (offering guided and reflective teaching experience for a period of 8 weeks, micro-teaching, and observing language classrooms). She is the author of a resource book Teaching English in the Primary Classroom: A Guide to Teaching Practice (University Studio Press); some of her work appears in Language and Education, TESOL Quarterly, the Journal of Applied Linguistics and other journals. Her research interests include teaching English to young learners, teacher education and development, teaching English as an International Language, and second language acquisition (mainly in the field of classroom discourse and corrective feedback).
