Event Description: The purpose of this talk is to present global trends in film title translation, based on the metadata retrieved from the Internet Movie Database IMDb. It’s based on the research that purported to test some preliminary hypotheses concerning (1) the growing share of films distributed with non-translated titles; (2) the growing share of films distributed with hybrid names that combine non-translated titles with added subheadings; (3) the presence of global and regional discrepancies in the ways festival and mainstream film titles are being localized for respective audiences; (4) the variation of localizing trends relative to genre and region of distribution. In order to do that it presents quantitative analysis of two corpora of film titles, illustrating different production and distribution models, that is festival aka “art” cinema (represented by Cannes Film Festival) and “mainstream” cinema (represented by most popular productions distributed globally).
Dr. Miłosz Stelmach holds a Ph.D. in arts studies. He works as an assistant professor at the Institute of Audiovisual Studies, Jagiellonian University in Kraków, Poland.
