ΕVENT ABSTRACT
We use language every day, almost unconsciously. Only once we step outside the comfort zone of our native language can we begin to see how much we are shaped, culturally and psychologically, by the words we use. If we think of language as a material like bronze or marble, we become makers of language, ποιητές γλωσσών. Ηow does the material of language—its sonic texture and syntax, the histories and resonances of its words—affect the way we think and express ourselves? Do we present different versions of ourselves in English και στα Ελληνικά? And what opportunities might arise from our incomplete understanding of another language? In this workshop, participants will examine their personal relationship to language, particularly to English and Greek. We’ll begin with readings and exercises that play with the creative space between languages, and then participants will investigate the effects of language in their lives through writing. This collaborative workshop will help participants develop their communication and presentation skills, learn to make conscious decisions about language use, build English proficiency, and strengthen their writing style and process.
