ABSTRACT

Meeting Shakespeare can be scary! His beautiful, complicated language, his perfect linguistic rhythm, his well-thought characters, his fabulous stories and their exquisite plot are mind-blowing but equally demanding. How does it feel to meet Shakespeare? His plays, written centuries ago, still resonate! How can Shakespeare be a contemporary? In the gothic tragedy Macbeth, which is set in the dramatic landscape of Scotland, magic leads the horrific actions. Shakespeare plays with the supernatural masterfully. The witches, the moon, the sound of animals, the flying daggers, the smell of blood, the ghosts and the illusions create a dark, alluring painting where humans turn to puppets of a higher power. Or, maybe not? The discussion of the supernatural will be facilitated by references to Anastasia Revi’s production of Macbeth at the National Theatre of Northern Greece in 2016; by using this production as an example, Anastasia will also talk about the choices a director has to make when staging a play by Shakespeare.
