ΕVENT ABSTRACT

Kate Ogden, Professor of Art History, will present an interactive workshop on the influence of Greek art and mythology over the centuries. Greek myths, characters, and works of art have inspired many later artists, from the Ancient Romans and Renaissance artists to the present day. With the use of an illustrated PowerPoint, Professor Ogden will guide students through visual analysis using a series of comparative images. As with literature, in which writers make decisions about style, word choice, and narrative structure, painters make choices about materials, color, composition, and other elements of art. Among the many Greek subjects that have been explored by later artists are The Sleeping Ariadne, Apollo and Daphne, Theseus and the Minotaur, and the Judgment of Paris.

BIO INFORMATION

Professor Kate Ogden received her Ph.D. in art history with a focus on American art from Columbia University, New York. Since 1991 she has worked at Stockton University in Galloway, New Jersey, where she teaches the two-semester art history survey in addition to specialized courses on American art, modern art, and the history of photography. Professor Ogden has published articles and essays on nineteenth and twentieth century painting and photography, including a book, Yosemite (Reaktion Books, London) and a major essay, “California as Kingdom Come,” in Yosemite: Art of an American Icon (Autry Museum of Western Heritage, Los Angeles).
