ABSTRACT

Where can exquisite attention to the human body take the writer? This 90-minute workshop invites participants into an intuitive, image-driven, embodied writing practice inspired by the work of María Irene Fornés and taught through the lens of narrative medicine. Playwright and narrative medicine specialist Catherine Rogers will guide workshoppers in crafting monologues or scenes from image and imagination, freeing them from the constraints of predetermined ideas. Through timed writing, brief embodiment exercises, and a chance to hear each other’s work, participants will explore the core narrative medicine movements of attention, representation, and affiliation, encouraging deep listening, creative risk-taking, and discovery. Open to students of all disciplines as well as writers, clinicians, educators, and artists, the workshop requires no prior experience. Participants will leave with new pages, practical generative tools, and stories that may take them by surprise.
