ECTS: 6
Description
This practice-led module
shows how audiovisual translation (subtitling, SDH, dubbing/voice-over and
audio description) can be used to enhance foreign-language learning (listening,
speaking, reading, writing and mediation) and transversal skills (media
literacy, accessibility awareness, collaboration).
The module integrates
contemporary tools, including AI-driven translation/voice generation and social
media formatting, alongside foundational principles of accessibility and
professional ethics. Students design and test CEFR-aligned AVT tasks, produce
short EN ↔ GR AVT videos and deliver classroom-ready projects.
By the end of this class, students will be able to:
- Explain and justify how specific AVT modes support defined languagelearning
outcomes at different CEFR levels.
- Design CEFR-aligned tasks that use AVT to develop lexis, grammar, discourse,
interculturality and mediation.
- Produce short, classroom-ready EN-GR AVT artefacts (subtitles/SDH,
dubbing/VO, audio description) that meet readability/timing/audio conventions.
- Operate basic AVT workflows (spotting, segmentation, file formats, QC) using
entry-level tools (Subtitle Edit/Aegisub, Audacity).
- Integrate accessibility and ethics (SDH/AD principles,
copyright/permissions, data/voice consent) in educational contexts.
- Evaluate and apply emerging technologies in AVT, including Machine
Translation, Post-Editing (MTPE) and AI-driven voice generation.
