Project title: PLOUTOS: cooPeration for achieving third country nationaLs’ financial independence thrOUgh financial liTeracy tOols and entrepreunerShip bootcamps

“PLOUTOS” originated in ancient Greece as a word to describe wealth & prosperity. The aim of PLOUTOS project is to improve TCN’s access to financial services via: a) a course on financial literacy and sustainability supported by a relevant language course, b) a course on community interpreting offered to people already offering this service without having had any professional training (including TCN’s residing in the host country for more than 3 years, second generation, employees of financial service providers and NGOs), c) practice business programme enabling practical training of TCNs in applying their financial literacy skills on the job d)multi-lingual technical tools offering TCNs with business training & access to microfinance in any EU country through the 96 members of the European Microfinance Network, lifting cultural and administrative burdens. The multistakeholder consortium of 11 project partners from 7 EU member states (SE, CY, GR, IT, BE, HR, BG) includes 2 Universities, 2 SMEs, 1 Banking & 1 Microfinance Associations, 1 Pubic authority representative and 4 NGOs. PLOUTOS will impact the local communities by increasing TCNs’ confidence and motivation for self-employment thanks to a new skillset as well as it will reduce the fear and instability that comes as a result of TCNs dependence on the surrounding society. Furthermore, many refugees & migrants have no access to banks and other financial services, in this sense, the enormous hurdle on their way to self-reliance and economic independence will be addressed. OUTCOMES: PLOUTOS main outcome is the improvement of TCNs’ financial literacy and the provision of access to a variety of financial services. OUTPUTS: PLOUTOS tangible outputs are the financial literacy educational materials, the acceleration practice Business programme and the financial tool. The main intangible outputs is the confidence & knowledge that TCNs will acquire in various fields aiming at improving their access to financial services.

Project title: CLIL-LOTE (languages other than English) (European Center for Modern Languages)

Scientific supervisor: Marina Mattheoudakis

Languages Other Than English (LOTE) – i.e. foreign language subjects such as e.g. French, German, Spanish – face a crisis in many European countries. Even if pupils learn LOTE as part of their primary or secondary education, there is a tendency that afterwards they do not continue to learn nor to use these languages. However, studies show that there is a strong demand for proficiency in these languages in the labour market. Content and Language Integrated Learning (CLIL) creates situations for content-based, meaningful language use in LOTE classrooms or in other subjects, hereby promoting learners’ motivation for LOTE. The project conceptualises CLIL as part of intercultural education and links CLIL to plurilingual education while promoting language awareness through its focus on LOTE and a pluralistic approach to languages within CLIL.

Project title: Integrating frame semantic resources into EFL instruction

The project aims to develop a comprehensive methodology for teaching metaphor (at the level of language, thought and communication) in English as a foreign language and to conduct a pilot study implementing new learning materials that make use of relevant frame semantic resources (FrameNet and MetaNet).

Project title: Teacher Training for the Introduction of English in pre-primary education (EAN)

The project is undertaken by the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki (Lead and Coordinating Institution) in cooperation with the Institute of Educational Policy and National Kapodistrian University of Athens. The project aims at supporting the introduction of English in pre-primary education by providing training schemes for educators and developing specially designed educational scenarios for pre-primary learners. It is an innovative project in the context of the educational reform introduced in Greece in the context of upgrading the educational infrastructure of all levels of education.

The International Corpus of Learner English is a corpus of written production by higher intermediate to advanced learners of English as a foreign language. The corpus (launched by the Centre for English Corpus Linguistics at the University of Louvain) includes a number of collaborating universities around the world. The Aristotle University of Thessaloniki has contributed to ICLE by creating the Greek International Corpus of Learner English (GRICLE) which includes written productions of 4th year students in the School of English Language and Literature.
