This module starts with the premise that original writing and translation are related activities, both entailing setting priorities, iterative research, and delivering a fit-for-purpose, original text. Taking into account recent developments in natural language generation (NLG), the module also familiarises students with principles of writing, the characteristic differences between human and AI output, as well as the growing importance of creativity in the era of Large Language Models (LLMs). Through progressively complex writing tasks, students develop divergent and convergent thinking. Weekly workshops combine constrained writing exercises, within a collaborative environment of reading, analysing and revising texts drawn from a variety of written and multimodal genres.

Intended Learning Outcomes (ILOs)

By the end of the module, students will be able to:

•        analyse and produce texts for different communicative purposes, audiences, and cultural contexts
•        understand writing as a purposeful act that serves specific communicative goals
•        develop skills to address practical writing challenges relevant to translation
•        gain awareness of their own writing processes
•        become familiar with theoretical and practical tools, including digital tools and LLMs, that might support creativity

Assessment: Portfolio of written work with brief introduction (100%)
