Description
Ôhis module introduces students to key research and literature on women, gender, sexuality, identity and feminism in relation to translation. Students are exposed to a variety of texts that enables them to engage in a discussion of core theories, concepts and topics related to gender-conscious approaches to translation and to the role translation can play in the circulation of texts. Students are invited to explore the work of contemporary women writers and the translation of their texts, including fiction, LGBTQ+ literature and feminist (translation) theory. They will have the opportunity to critically analyse existing translations of writers and to do gender-conscious translations of selected passages from the texts under study.
Intended Learning Outcomes (ILOs)
The course is specifically designed to enable students to:
- critically analyse the relationships between translation and gender, language and gender;
- apply gender-conscious approaches to translation;
- identify translation challenges and define new issues in relation to gender, sexuality, and translation;
- develop the skills necessary to evaluate creative translation strategies;
- demonstrate a sound understanding of the texts and the ability to relate them to their social, cultural, and historical context;
- become familiar with the tools that will help them analyse and comment on translation as shaped by the background, circumstances, and constraints faced by translators;
- demonstrate knowledge of current issues in relation to gender, sexuality, and translation
