From the Emancipation Proclamation to the (Post) Civil Rights Movement Era: the Struggle of African Americans for Equal Rights

Violent confrontations and racial discrimination have influenced the United States on multiple levels, molding society and preparing the ground for massive changes in the political, social and financial realms. Konstantinos Karatzas will explore significant facts and figures of the 19th and 20th centuries, analyze the transformation in American society and the role of racial discrimination, segregation, violence, education and politics through a multi-faceted approach of their impact on collective memory and identity in the African American community. The quest for freedom will be explored through the analysis of the early Civil Rights Movement and key figures such as M.L. King, Jr., Malcolm X and the Black Panthers exposing the challenging phases and immense effort of the Black community to confront and overcome the obstacles of white supremacy. Current global upheaval and extreme political rhetoric within the United States have intensified polarization to such an extent that in some cases even social stability is challenged. Connecting the dots of African-American history, we will offer a multi-faceted approach to this influential chapter of global history.
