ÅVENT ABSTRACT
This two-hour hands-on creative writing workshop is offered for students, faculty, and community members from all disciplines and at all levels of experience. Through a series of exercises designed to stimulate the imagination and access the stories that reside within each of us, playwright Catherine Rogers will guide participants in what the legendary playwright Maria Irene Fornes calls “creating life” (A.J. Onstad 2009). Catherine studied with Irene Fornes in the U.S. and will incorporate many of Fornes’s time-tested methods into this workshop so as to craft an often surprising journey into the process of creating the dramatic narrative.
Just as Aeschylus summoned the Athenians to the Theater of Dionysus to witness together a dramatization of the aftermath of war, so we turn to drama to help us make sense of life's complexities. “We understand our personal lives, our identities and even our bodies in terms of the stories we tell about them,” says Narrative Medicine practitioner and literature professor Shannon Wooden (UMC News 2016). Through writing, thinking on paper, voicing and embodying the stories we create, we hope to become better tuned to our own stories and the stories of others whether in literature, in the polis, or in our individual day to day encounters.
No playwriting or theatre experience is necessary for the workshop. All that is needed are paper, pen, curiosity, and the willingness to explore.
BIO
Catherine Rogers is a playwright and performer. She is a lecturer in Narrative Medicine at Columbia University. For more than 20 years Catherine has been designing and teaching writing classes and workshops for universities, schools, and theatres including NYU, Pratt Institute, Parsons School of Design, Columbia University, and as a teaching artist for Theatre for a New Audience New York. In 2009 and 2013, as Fulbright Scholar in Greece, Catherine offered Creative Writing Intensives at Aristotle University and the University of Athens Kapodistrian. In 2010, she lectured for the American Embassy in Greece Days of American Culture.
Catherine has long harbored the conviction that artists and scientists belong side by side in the process of discovery. Working with Dr. Rita Charon and the founders of the Narrative Medicine program at Columbia, Catherine has had the pleasure to conduct Narrative Medicine lectures and workshops in such venues as Brooklyn Lutheran Hospital, the Aristotle University Thessaloniki Schools of English and of Medicine, the Takis Sinopoulos Poet’s House Athens, the Fulbright Foundation in Greece, the Center for Narrative Practice Boston, the Association of Writers and Writing Programs, the WELL-Med Conference on Well Being in Health Care, the European Association of American Studies, and the Columbia University Program in Narrative Medicine.
Her plays are published in Voices Made Flesh (U Wisconsin 2003), Spontaneous Combustion (Manhattan Theatre Source 2003), and Historia Calamitatum (Salvage Vanguard 1994). She performed her solo show The Sudden Death of Everyone in New York at Dixon Place before touring to Greece in 2009. Her plays have also been produced at Manhattan Theatre Source, HERE, Hyde Park Austin, the Women’s Project, Cleveland Public Theatre. and many others. Catherine’s prose poems are published.
She holds the MS in Narrative Medicine from Columbia University and the MFA in Playwriting from the University of Texas where she was a James A. Michener Fellow. Catherine is a Fulbright Specialist in creative writing.
