A creative workshop on speculative fiction with the title 'Fantasy Journeys: The Writing of Speculative Fiction' will be offered on Friday March 4th, 2016, by Dimitra Nikolaidou (Ph.D. Candidate,Department of American Literature, School of English, Aristotle University of Thessaloniki).
This workshop is going to take place at School of English Library (New Philosophy Building 3rd floor) between 18:00-20:00.

ÅVENT ABSTRACT
This workshop will introduce students to the basic elements of speculative fiction, with an emphasis on fantasy, horror and science fiction. Participants will learn what to prioritize and what to avoid in a genre that is fraught with tropes, clichés, narrative traps but also plenty of opportunities.
The workshop will also address three basic elements we need to master in order to write speculative fiction: world-building, character and plot. Each element will be introduced along with examples from well known speculative works. Relevant exercises will help cement the tips and skills presented in each section. Finally, the participants will be advised on where to find appropriate resources that can help them from the moment of their initial inspiration until the day they first publish.

BIO
Dimitra Nikolaidou is a Ph.D. candidate in the Department of American Literature (School of English, Aristotle University). She holds B.A.s from the School of English at Aristotle University and from the University of Macedonia, as well as an M.Sc. from the University of Stirling. She holds creative writing certificates from the University of Iowa and the Open University. She has been working in publishing since 2006, and her non-fiction work has appeared in the Greek press as well as on cracked.com and Atlas Obscura.
