ÅVENT ABSTRACT

Based on the 19th century idea of the total artwork, creative teams of people have henceforth sought to fuse theater, architecture, literature, musical composition, cinema, in an attempt to join their multiple types of expertise from the worlds of theory, philosophy and technology in a single collaborative masterpiece. Innovative expressions of the above concept also include recent uses of computer technology as a “meta-medium” that integrates all media within a single interface.

Particular originality in collaborative creation is traced back to the beginning of the 20th century where writers and artists escape from stereotypical thinking by using the unconscious to guide and unfold their imagination. In surrealistic practices, such as the Exquisite corpse, a creative team investigates nonlinear and discontinuous terms of art production: words or images are collectively assembled and each collaborator adds to a composition in sequence, either by following a rule that the team poses or by being allowed to see only the end of what the previous person contributed. However, theoretical speculation arises regarding expectations of the outcome: is this  kind of experimentation an art-making or merely a playing process?

With this knowledge of past artistic practices and the assets of today’s means of expression – combining hands-on with technological practice – we will attempt to approach a new idea of the total artwork through a series of creative and collaborative activities, such as sketching, narrating, form-shaping and tweeting.
