A workshop will be offered on Tuesday April 9th, 2013, by Dr. Maria Ristani (School of English Ph.D. graduate).
This is going to be held in the School of English Library Space (3rd floor; New Philosophy Building) between 17:00-19:00.
The title of the workshop is:
'Is language different from music? A workshop on Samuel Beckett’s plays through rhythm.'
A certificate of attendance will also be provided.
For this workshop you'll need to wear comfortable clothes as well as bring pencils or wooden sticks with you.

Workshop Description
Rhythm is one of these elements in language that urges us to participate in a text-event in ways other than cognitive: orally, acoustically, kinesthetically. In this workshop we will focus on the role of rhythm in a text, and the ways it alters and qualifies our experience of language on the page. Using two of Samuel Beckett’s short pieces (Play and Rockaby) as our working material, we will see how rhythm guides our experience of the plays. We will examine how the rhythmic pattern of each play interacts with meaning, testing out at the same time how our bodies, voices and minds respond to each pattern.
Maria Ristani - SHORT Bio
Maria Ristani holds a PhD degree in Theatre Studies from the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, following her four-year research on the rhythmic idiom of Samuel Beckett’s short plays. Her research interests include twentieth-century theatre and performance art, as well as recent developments in music composition and performance.
