Renaissance Love Poetry: Description
Love is an eternal theme in literature. The early modern period marks a heyday of British love poetry, leaving a rich heritage for our relish. Through a close reading of representative love poems in the English Renaissance, this course attempts to explore the following topics: courtly love, secular love and divine love, symbols of love, feminine beauty, symptoms of love, love and sex, love and marriage, faith and betrayal, ideal and reality, death and immortality, love and society, the writing of love poetry, etc. Poets covered will include men and women such as Shakespeare, Milton, Spenser, Sidney, Marlowe, Jonson, Elizabeth I, Mary Wroth, John Donne, George Herbert, Robert Herrick, and Andrew Marvell. This short seminar limits itself to the following topics: the female voice; metaphysical love poetry.
