Description
This course examines the formation and development of American Modernist poetry and relevant trends by American poets who lived both in the U.S. and Europe. In particular, students:
- Familiarize themselves with the close reading and analysis of various poetic styles as these are formulated by various practicing poets coming from diverse social, cultural and racial groups (as is the case with African-Americans and the "Harlem Renaissance"), as well as from American poets who resided in Europe during the first half of the 20th century.
- Examine the development of poetic writing in conjunction with various social/political/artistic developments and events.
- Familiarize themselves with the reading and interpreting of essays that the poets themselves have written
The primary sources to be examined in class come from Norton Anthology and additional sources that are uploaded on the Elearning platform. The course is further backed up by the necessary bibliography available via the Library of the School of English.
Assessment: Presentations, reports, final exams and/or essays.
