Description
The course examines a popular and commercially successful genre, namely fantasy literature, written in the English language. By studying and critically analyzing selected short stories and novels by American male and female authors (published from the 1900s onwards), the course aims to illuminate the distinct elements and tropes which differentiate fantasy literature from the other categories of the literature of the fantastic. It aspires to familiarize students with major authors of the genre and to help them appreciate fantasy narratives as serious works of art.
Learning outcomes and competences:
- Familiarization with the elements/tropes of fantasy literature
- Familiarization with writers of fantasy that have shaped and/or influenced the field
- Appreciation of fantasy writers as serious creators of complex works of literature
- Good understanding of the social and psychological benefits from reading works of fantasy
- Cultivation of analytical and critical thinking
