The Laboratory for the Study of Social Issues, Media and Education of the Department of Early Childhood Education, School of Education, University of Ioannina, in collaboration with the Greek Studies Program of the University of New South Wales and Unity in Philia, and with the participation of:

The program is scheduled to take place in Sydney from 6–11 September, on the campus of UNSW, and will be implemented through the Center for Training and Lifelong Learning (K.E.DI.VI.M.) of the University of Ioannina.

The program is held under the auspices of H.E. the President of the Hellenic Republic Mr. Constantine An. Tassoulas.

It is emphasized that the program has been included in the Strategic Plan of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs for the Greek Diaspora (2024–2027).

The 12th International Summer University is titled:

The Greek Language in Australia: From Memory to the Future

Specifically, the activities of the program will be hosted at the Rex Vowels Theatre amphitheatre, located in the building of the School of Electrical Engineering at the University of New South Wales, which was founded in 1949 and is ranked among the world’s leading higher education institutions. It is an amphitheatre with a seating capacity of 300 people, equipped with state-of-the-art hybrid educational technology and fully accessible to people with disabilities.

Indicative themes

A tradition of extroversion

After 11 years of recognized success, the tradition of fostering extroversion and collaborations with prominent international institutions in education, culture and the media continues. It is recalled that in previous years, the Summer University “Greek Language, Culture and Media” was supported by the Center for Hellenic Studies in Greece of Harvard University, the Hellenic Office of the European Parliament, the Greek Section of the Association of European Journalists, the Orthodox Academy of Crete, the French Section of the European Press Club (Club de la Presse Européenne, Paris), the Centre Culturel Hellénique of Paris, the Instituto De Letras of Rio De Janeiro University, the Department of Media, Communications, Creative Arts, Language and Literature, Faculty of Arts, Macquarie University, the Macquarie Greek Studies Foundation in Sydney, the Greek Applied Linguistics Association, the Athens–Macedonian News Agency, Study in Greece, the University of Chicago, Center for Hellenic Studies, the Hellenic Association of Political Scientists, and others.

In the last two years, the program was held with great success in Boston in collaboration with the Maliotis Cultural Center of Hellenic Holy Cross and the Executive Director Mrs Chryssoula Kourkounti.

Participants

The program will feature university professors and researchers from institutions in Greece and abroad, intellectuals, authors, artists, directors, and journalists from diaspora media outlets.

Free participation – Target audience

Participation in the program is free of charge. It is addressed to undergraduate and postgraduate students, PhD candidates, educators, journalists, and also accepts a proportion of professionals with related interests within the framework of lifelong learning. Participants will receive certificates of participation and educational material.

Program promotion

The 2026 program will be promoted through television and radio advertising on public broadcasting services, the Hellenic Parliament Channel, and Greek diaspora radio and television media. The television spot features director and actor Mr. Akyllas Karazissis. The program poster depicts a family of Greek migrants from the 1940s, among whose members appears, as a minor at the time, Ms. Georgia Mambladimou–Thivaiou. The Organizing Committee of the International Summer University expresses its sincere thanks to Ms. Mambladimou–Thivaiou for the kind permission to use the photograph.

The proceedings of the program will also be broadcast online.

Program directors

Founder and Scientific Director of the Program is Professor of Linguistics and Greek Language at the Department of Early Childhood Education, University of Ioannina, Dr. Nikoletta Tsitsanoudis–Mallidis, Dean of the School of Education and Head of the “Greek Language, Culture and Media” unit of the Laboratory for the Study of Social Issues, Media and Education.

The organizational direction of the program in Australia is led by Dr. Vasilis Adrahtas, Head of the Greek Studies Program at UNSW Sydney and Coordinator of the Islamic Studies Program at Western Sydney University.
