The use of arbitrary or exaggerated attribution/categorisation or
evaluation both in news stories and in various types of texts in the
print media can indicate some interesting tendencies, which add the
characteristic of colour not only to the print media but to the modern
Western societies, as well. More specifically, the use of certain
words that attribute significant qualities to relatively insignificant
situations and/or personalities or the frequent occurrence of
arbitrary evaluation/categorisation can be interpreted as populism.
However, such phenomena can be further interpreted in terms of a more
general tendency on the part of the human being to focus almost
exclusively on the tangible, and the visible, on that which can be
fulfilled with the least possible effort and at the least possible
time. Moreover, they indicate lack of moderation and lack of the sense
of proportion.

In a quest for daily 'liveness' as immediacy, Greek television news
broadcasts routinely incorporate large chunks of 'live' transmissions,
consisting of on-the-scene reporters interviewing eyewitnesses to
emerging news, which are offered to the audience as slices of real
life 'as it happens/has happened'. Participants to such occasions
proffer their witnessed accounts in a number of different shapes,
which range from expert opinion to life-stories and from non-narrative
to narrative modes, employing strategies which are drawn from the pool
of ordinary everyday talk, but also, often, borrowing from television
discourse.

The columns on language usage in the Greek newspapers and periodicals
are examined in order to identify the linguistic and ideological
standards by means of which Standard Modern Greek is being
conceptualized and spoken of in public discourse. Although the
linguistic standards employed reproduce parochial ideological
oppositions, which belong to the history of the perennial Greek
language question, in recent years a significant change has occurred
in the conception of 'proper usage'. A new model has emerged, which
places emphasis on a small set of writing practices, focusing on
particular constructions; this new 'phraseological' model tends to
replace the once dominant 'grammatical' or 'morphological' approach,
which used to place emphasis on the morphology and the etymology of
words. While the traditional model was considered appropriate for
general education, the new one can be seen as means for securing
'symbolic distinction' to a smaller group of craft professionals
(writers, editors, proofreaders).

The language used in the press and the mass media is facing more than
ever a serious problem due to the fact that it never had acquired its
own specialised vocabulary. In the absence of a closed specific
terminology, the language of journalism is open, without any
restrictive borders, to the outsiders of the profession. Recently,
there has been a visible change in the news, not only in the use of
words but also in syntax. A much looser vocabulary with some shocking
words is permitted. Another symptom of the change, visible in printed
journalism, is the elimination of strict punctuation rules. There is
an increase in the use of quotation marks in the texts suggesting the
double meaning or putting emphasis on the words. The syntax of the
text, not only in the newspapers and magazines but in radio and
television as well has become inordinate. Probably, the language used
in journalism, being the everyday language, reflects better than
anything else the changes of the world. Particularly, in the 90's,
after the collapse of the Eastern Bloc, globalisation and the use of
the Internet, a new attitude about lifestyle and design has developed
and was first expressed in the media and has made major inroads in the
journalistic vocabulary.

This paper deals with a well-known variety of newspaper language, the
headline language. Front-page headline constitute a structured,
stylistically marked unit of news discourse, i.e. a micro-text, which
is greatly accommodated by 'melodic' punctuation marks (question mark,
exclamation mark, suspension points) and quotation marks as well.
These marks convey interpersonal (social / affective) meanings in
their own right. In particular, as illocutionary pointers they
indicate non-assertive speech acts, while expressing various
non-referential meanings, and as projection pointers they turn a text
to an overtly polyphonic ensemble, where connotations play a crucial
role in textual meaning production. Drawing on material from national
newspapers, this paper aims to describe in detail the specific uses of
interpersonal punctuation in headline language and support the
assumption that headline punctuation (along with grammatical
punctuation) makes up a continuum of markedness ranging from stylistic
neutrality to pronounced expressivity.

On
constate donc que souvent l'interaction 's'édifie' irrationnellement
sans réciprocité élémentaire de perspectives; d'autre part les entrées
des interactants forment un discours qui se caractérise par une
particularité d'options qui concernent les types de cohésion entre les
échanges ainsi que la cohérence des actes de langage réalisés.

Sociolinguistics aims to study language not on an abstract level but
within the framework of specific situations, demonstrating its meaning
for human life. Thus, it suggests a socio-political and cultural
approach to linguistic analysis and it describes the variation of
every language and linguistic community. In this light, we consider
sociolinguistics to provide important tools for successful research
into social issues in the area of journalism. In the present paper, we
analyse specific sociolinguistic issues, which are directly related to
journalistic research. Specifically, we deal with the issue of
linguistic heterogeneity in a multicultural society and certain
research methods that are related with journalism, those of the
interview and the participant observation. We discuss issues such as
ethnic identity and the introduction of the researcher into
communities with the aim of gathering useful information. Finally, we
suggest ways of combining sociolinguistic theory and research with the
practices of journalists. We are convinced that such a combination
will contribute a great deal to the fulfillment of the social role of
journalists with a greater amount of credibility and success.

This paper aims at the exploration of the way that the users of the
Greek media discourse use and abuse the various possible linguistic
potentialities. For that reason, we analyse and show through examples
taken from the Greek media discourse several chosen linguistic choices
commonly used by Greek journalists during the last years; these
linguistic choices are the subject of the international scientific
research relevant to tests and style: re-contextualization,
conversationalization, oralization, intertextuality, referee design.
We also examine the use and abuse of the morphological variety of the
Greek media discourse. |
